Turnbull Government Commits to Melbourne Airport Rail Link

16-April-2018

The Turnbull Government will build the Melbourne Airport Rail Link, connecting the CBD and Tullamarine Airport for all Victorians.

Alan Tudge MP said that a rail connection to Melbourne Airport had been talked about for 50 years but would now be brought to fruition through an investment of $5 billion from the Turnbull Government. He said 34 million people use the airport every year.

“There has been countless reviews, reports and recommendations but Melbourne is still waiting for a service almost all of the world’s great cities take for granted,” Tudge said.

“The Melbourne Airport Rail Link will slash airport travel times by busting congestion on the Tullamarine Freeway which is used by up to 210,000 vehicles each and every day.

“It will boost the Victorian economy and create thousands of new jobs – it will be a symbol to the world that Melbourne is open for business and open for jobs.”

Alan Tudge MP said Melbourne is the nation’s second busiest airport with forecasts indicating a throughput of 60 million passengers by 2030.

“Sydney and Brisbane airports are connected to the city by rail and in Perth, an airport rail link is under construction,” Tudge said.

“This is a project that Melbourne, Victoria and the millions of people who use Tullamarine Airport every year demand and deserve.

“And the Turnbull Government wants to work constructively in partnership with the Victorian Government on this iconic piece of infrastructure.”

The member for Aston said the new investment would take the Commonwealth infrastructure investment in Victoria to $17.5 billion which includes the $3 billion set aside for another important infrastructure project in Melbourne, the East West Link.
