New ice plan to make difference locally

The Federal Member for Aston, the Hon Alan Tudge MP, welcomed the Federal Government’s ice plan which will help address the ice epidemic locally.

The plan was informed by feedback collected by local residents and collated in Mr Tudge’s Aston Ice Report.

It includes a huge investment in preventative messages as well as $241 million for additional rehabilitation facilities.

Mr Tudge has campaigned on the ice issue throughout the year and has some responsibilities for the national response as Assistant Minister for Social Services.

A key part of the plan involves educating young people and changing social attitudes.

Grants will be provided to local community groups such as local football clubs o help with the message.

Mr Tudge said he hoped it will lead to additional rehab services locally.

“Taking ice has become normalised for too many young people. We have to change social attitudes towards the drug, just as we have successfully done with smoking,” Mr Tudge said.

“If we don’t, there are going to be more lives destroyed and families torn apart.

“The message had to be – don’t ever touch it. For those who are addicted, they need to get rehab support to get off it.

“Ice is one of the most destructive and addictive drugs produced that unfortunately can be relatively easily manufactured.

“We will never defeat ice just on the supply side. We have to stop the demand.”
