Tudge and Wood welcome Monash Freeway upgrade announcement

The Federal Member for Aston, the Hon Alan Tudge MP, and the Federal Member for La Trobe, Jason Wood MP today welcomed the announcement of a proposed $400 million upgrade to the Monash Freeway.

Under the proposed upgrade, the Monash Freeway would be widened to ten lanes between East Link and the South Gippsland Freeway and have a managed motorway system installed.

The Monash caters for volumes of between 130,000 and 200,000 vehicles per day.

It is forecast that there will be a 42 per cent increase in vehicle numbers on the Monash by 2031 and a 53 per cent increase in heavy vehicle numbers over that same period.

“We have been lobbying the State Government to fix the Monash for a long time,” Mr Tudge said.

“We have met with the Federal Treasurer to make sure that Federal funding will be available for this vital road project,” he said.

“People know the Monash as the ‘Monash Car Park’. It is the most important road in Melbourne as it is the only major east to west arterial,” Mr Tudge said.

“Since the Andrews Government tore up the East West Link contract; this project has become even more important for those in the outer Eastern suburbs.”

“I will keep pushing the state government to fix our vital roads, including fixing the bottle neck between East Link and Warrigal Road on the Monash.”

Mr Wood said that the Monash needs immediate attention to clear up the congestion.

“It’s good to see that this proposal will include expanding the traffic management system which will increase the capacity of the Monash,” Mr Wood said.

“The benefits from the last upgrade on the Monash have disappeared because of the rapid growth in outer East areas like La Trobe and Knox,” he said.
