National Broadband Network rollout schedule for Knox announced

The Federal Member for Aston, the Hon Alan Tudge MP, has announced the National Broadband Network (NBN) will be rolled out throughout Knox from next year.

As part of the NBN, superfast broadband is coming to the electorate of Aston under the accelerated rollout plan.

Construction will begin next year with 90 per cent of premises in Knox able to connect to the NBN within three years.

The new rollout plan, which extends to September 2018, provides a breakdown of when the network will be starting in specific locations and the type of technology that will be used.

Across Knox, the three-year rollout schedule includes:

The rollout will be a mix of existing and new hybrid fiber-coaxial (HFC) lines and fibre-to-the-node (FTTN) technology.

Once complete, NBN services will reach download speeds up to 100Mbps.

The expansion of the HFC network will follow existing practice in the area.  It will be underground where that has been the case previously and placed overhead if aerial lines are already in the area.  As part of the rollout, all HFC networks will be transferred to NBN ownership.

"I have been pushing for this for a long time and am so pleased it will finally be delivered," Mr Tudge said.

"The rollout will start next year in Rowville and Lysterfield, which is the area of greatest need. Broadband is simply not accessible in much of this area. This plan will fix it.  For most people, broadband access is an important as a telephone."
